Implementation of the European Higher Education Area: Challenges and Opportunities

Representatives of the Belarusian Ministry of Education, the Council of Europe and the Bologna Follow Up Group gathered in Minsk for a seminar to discuss implementation of the European Higher Education Area principles.

The event provided representatives of Belarusian universities, the European Students Union  and other organisations with an opportunity to discuss the Bologna process and perspective development of the Belarusian system of education.

Participants of the seminar focused on some aspects of developing modern education, in particular on the demand for specialists on the international labour markets, internalisation of education and academic exchanges between students, researchers and teachers.
The event also took time to discuss student participation in university governance and autonomy of higher educational institutions in shaping up curricula and organising educational process.

Members of the Bologna Follow Up Group reported that as soon as on March 24-25 Riga (Latvia) will host a meeting of BFUG where Belarus' application to become a member of the European Higher Education Area will be considered. After that BFUG will provide recommendations to European Ministers of Education on Belarus joining the Bologna process. Belarus' application will be formally voted on in May 2015 in Yerevan (Armenia).

The event opened with welcome words by the Belarus’ Minister of Education Mikhail Zhuravkov and by the Head of the Council of Europe Education Department, Sjur Bergman.

During the seminar Belarusian experts and their colleagues from European countries studied issues on implementing instruments of European higher education area in national higher education system. European experts were introduced to the experience of Belarus’ cooperation with the European higher education area.
